Cal Poly Pomona: Barkada

Barkada is a Tagalog word that translates to a group of friends

Cal Poly Pomona Barkada is a Filipino-American culture club that was established in the 1980s. The club promotes Pilipino culture to its surrounding communities through its four pillars: academic, culture, athletics, and social.

As their graphic designer, also working in public relations, for the 2023 to 2024 term, I had one of the responsibilities of designing their shirt. As well as managing the image of the club through public events and marketing through our social media.

Social Media

Many of the social media posts were made on Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva.

Instagram was the primary social media platform for our audience to stay updated on upcoming events and fundraisers. I maintained positive relationships with over 1,500 followers, the general public, and other college Filipino-American organizations.

Apparel

First image is in a Babayin script that reads “Barkada” The other images incorporate the Philippines Sun similar to the nation’s flag.

Final Design

Distributed to over 100 general club members, each person wearing the shirt carries the club’s four core pillars: academics, culture, athletics, and social.

It also includes the bahay kubo, a Filipino wooden stilt house, with a design that pays an homage to the original logo which was made in the 1980’s.

The bahay kubo is surrounded by the Philippines national flower, the sampaguita, and includes 15 stars representing the 15 leadership positions that keep the club active.
